PSP-3000 Interlacing Issues

Q. Will Sony fix the problem in PSP-3000 screen with a new revision of hardware?
A. It's likely that some form of hardware revision will be required to fix the interlacing issues, as we discovered the scan lines are 100% related to the PSP-3000 screens. Sony hasn't addressed the issue yet.

Q. Will the PSP ever support WPA2 wireless encryption?
A. Currently, there is no hardware restriction in the PlayStation Portable that would prohibit the use of WPA2. Sony simply needs to add support in a future firmware upgrade.

Q. Is Mega Man 9 in the PSP Store?
A. Sadly, no. Mega Man 9 was released for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Really, Sony's promising more PSone games. Really.

How many times have you played CoolBoarders? How 'bout Coolboarders 2? That's pretty much all you'll find on the PlayStation Store if you're looking for a PS1 retro fix. While Japan has an overwhelming of retro titles available for download, the rest of the world has been slow to follow suit. Wouldn't it be nice to download Final Fantasy VII? Or Klonoa? Or Metal Gear Solid? There's so many titles we can think of off the top of our heads.

Well, John Koller is promising the situation will change. Seriously. Really. "Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," he told MTV Multiplayer.

We'll believe you when we see 'em, Koller.

Codemasters kicks up DiRT 2 for PSP too

Codemaster's critically acclaimed DiRT racing game is coming to PSP. Specifically, the sequel will be hitting the platform. This is surprising considering the first game never released on the handheld. DiRT 2 will launch on the PSP simultaneously with its big brother cousins on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2009.

Sony reveals 33 titles for Japan's adhocParty

Japan's adhocParty service sounds like a promising new feature. The ability to transform one's local ad hoc multiplayer games into an over-the-net experience via a PS3 is certainly something we have to give credit to Sony for. However, what games are compatible with the service? Quite a lot really -- 33 to be exact, as Sony reveals. That's not bad for a completely free service. See a full list of all 33 titles after the break.

Soul Eater becomes anime fighting game

If an anime gets popular enough in Japan, you know it will undoubtedly get a 2D fighting game on the PSP. That's just how things work. So, Soul Eater, Japan's latest obsession with death gods, was an obvious next-in-line candidate for PSP fighting game treatment.

Not much is known about this adaptation, but we doubt much more needs to be known. Check out Famitsu for screenshots -- as seems standard for PSP fighting games, the screens sure do look pretty. Now, the question remains: what are the odds this will ever see light of day out of Japan?

Sony fined $18.5 million in patent infringement case

Over two years ago, Agere Systems filed a suit against Sony for potential infringement on patents regarding "wireless local area network apparatus." Looks like the courts ruled in Agere Systems' favor. Sony has been fined $18.5 million for use of the technology in their devices, such as the mylo and PSP. The jury ruled that the patent infringement was willful.

Mana-Khemia set for release in January

Mana-Khemia: Student Alliance is a port of the PS2 game released earlier this year, but there are so many differences between the two. The PSP version substitutes regular multiplayer with adhoc multiplayer, and it also includes a "Jump Start" install feature on your memory stick for quicker load times. Couple that with new bosses and a widescreen presentation, the PSP version sounds worlds better than its PS2 counterpart. It sounds like if you waited for the PSP version, you've gotten the better end of the deal. That deal comes to fruition in two months time, January 2009. Dissidia TGS08 trailer and LE packaging revealed

Dissidia is literally only a month away from release in Japan and Square Enix isn't skimping on the information. The trailer we saw in Square Enix's Closed Theater is now available for public viewing pleasure (we really wished SE would do this with the rest of their Closed Theater trailers), as we've posted it right after the break. It's probably going to be the last trailer we see as it really hits the climax. Cloud and Terra were revealed in this trailer and you can finally see in-game footage of their fights.

In related news, Square Enix also released images of the Limited Edition game and PSP packaging. As seen above, the game packaging features some very detailed work from famed artist Yoshitaka Amano. It shows all ten heroes together with Cosmos. The Limited Edition PSP box is all white with a solid logo and some subtle designs. Check out an image of the PSP box and the TGS 08 trailer after the break.

See Cloud and Sephiroth clash in Dissidia

It's not completely new, you've seen Sephiroth in Dissidia trailers before and we've told you at TGS that Cloud would be in the game. If you had any doubt, then this scan from Shonen Jump magazine should finally cast off that inkling. Because really, print makes everything official.

While the in-game image isn't the clearest image ever, it still shows off the final Dissidia roster member, Cloud. With all characters revealed and a release in just over a month, all that's left to do now is wait to play. December 18 makes (Japanese) fanboy and fangirl's dreams come true.

How to access the adhocParty from the US

Those of you who are eager to try the adhocParty application we reported on last week are in luck, sort of. The good news is, gamers outside of Japan can also test out the service that lets PSP games with local AdHoc play to function over the internet via the PS3. The bad news is, you'll need:
  • a PSP and PS3 with the latest firmware
  • the PS3 must have Wi-Fi capabilities (any PS3 except for the 20GB SKU)
  • the PS3 must be connected online with an ethernet cable and not a wireless connection
  • a Japanese PSN account
  • a game that works with the service; the only game confirmed so far is Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G
Apparently, not everyone will be able to fulfill all those requirements, but if you happen to be able to, head over to PSPHyper to check out their short and simple guide on how to gain access to the adhocParty.

Q. I see that Puzzle Quest has been put on the Playstation Store. The original UMD release had an issue where none of your traveling companions gave you any benefit. Have you heard if the bug has been fixed in this version, or is it a straight port from the UMD?
A. No additional details have been released with the addition of Puzzle Quest to the PlayStation Store; This is a direct port of hte UMD game.

Q. How do you take a screenshot with the PSP? I thought I read that feature was included in the 5.0 firmware update.
A. This is available in only select PSP games. Games like Wipeout Pulse will allow you to take screenshots in a special "screenshot mode."

Q. If you buy a PS1 game on the PS store (Ex.Crash Bandicoot: Warped), would you need a PS3 to put it on your PSP?
A. While you can certainly use a PS3 to transfer content to your handheld, you can now download PlayStation Store content directly from your PSP (firmware 5.00+), or even the PC PlayStation Store.

Crisis Core inches towards 2 million sales

Let's talk about the good sales of a PSP game that isn't called Monster Hunter for one second, if you don't mind. The PSP-exclusive prequel to Final Fantasy VII has made quite a bit of dough for Square Enix, as the company revealed updated sales numbers for the game. Since its release, it has seen nearly 2 million units sold across the world, with Japan buying the largest amount: 820k units. North America resulted in 610k sales, and Europe is responsible for 460k.

The strong figures for Crisis Core may be why Square Enix has such a strong lineup of games planned for PSP. Compared to their DS games (Final Fantasy IV) and Wii games (Dragon Quest Swords), Crisis Core has easily resonated the most with its audience.

Microscopic look at PSP-3000 reveals reasons behind interlacing

Logic Sunrise took a microscope to both the PSP-2000 and 3000 to see why the 3000 has interlacing issues. At 40X magnification, it's clear that the two screens have very different pixels. Can you see what some of the major differences are?

The 3000 series has pixels aligned horizontally, not vertically. In addition, the blues of the 3000 are much darker. These two in tandem may be behind the interlacing "feature" of the 3000 screen.

PSP mod allows the use of a SNES controller

Once upon a time there was a girl who had limited use of one of her hands. Not to worry, she is still able to game after mastering the use of a Super Nintendo controller. However, she also enjoys the PSP but is understandably reluctant to learn how to play it with one hand. What's a gal to do?

Fortunately, a clever bloke was commissioned to create a mod for her so she can use the SNES controller to play games on her PSP. Here's how it happened: he added a small socket originally intended for a cell phone, put together a custom cable and plug for the socket, then wired it to be used with the vintage controller. The mod even acts as a stand and keeps the PSP at an angle. A video of this in action, after the break:

Europe gets LocoRoco 2 and Buzz! Brain Bender in November

The semi-official PlayStation blog ThreeSpeech has let out a list of Sony Europe's first party titles scheduled for release in November. Apparently, both LocoRoco 2 and Buzz! Brain Bender are SCEE's PSP offerings for the month; however, their respective dates come with an attached to-be-confirmed note -- so things could change.

LocoRoco 2 is slated for November 21, while the new Buzz! game is set a week later on the 28th. November 21 is a rather early date for LocoRoco 2 considering that Japan will be getting the title on December 4. We suppose Europeans love the smug-looking blobs more than they do in Asia. Meanwhile, North America will still have to settle with 2009 for a release date.

PlayStation Store for PC reopens with Media Manager 3

The new PlayStation Store for PC has opened, and it looks good. Once again, it's limited to Windows PCs. This time, it'll require the installation of the free Media Manager 3.0 software. After a brief installation and registration process, you'll be able to access the PlayStation Store directly from the interface. Anyone that has used the PS3 version of the PlayStation Store will be quite familiar with the layout of the Store.

Other features of the Media Manager include the ability to transfer music and photos to your system through a simple drag-and-drop interface. You'll even be able to rip music off of audio CDs directly onto your system. You'll also be able to back up for save and game data. Overall, we'll say the new Media Manager software is great -- especially with its current price tag.

Update: A new video walkthrough is available, after the cut.

4GB PSP Entertainment Pack will no longer see release

When the PSP Brite was introduced, SCEA had plans for two bundles. The first, which is available in stores now, is the Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack, which includes a silver PSP-3000, 1GB Memory Stick, a copy of Ratchet & Clank and echochrome download for $199. The other option, which was originally supposed to be available in November was the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack, which included a black PSP-3000, 4GB Memory Stick and a download of Everyday Shooter for $199.

According to the PlayStation.blog, the 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack has been canceled before release. "SCEA has seen significant interest in the Ratchet & Clank Size Matters PSP Entertainment Pack in North America, which includes the updated PSP-3000. As a result, we will be streamlining our PSP hardware lineup and will no longer be offering the previously announced 4GB Memory PSP Entertainment Pack."

Sounds like a bad PR spin to us, but we'll manage. The Ratchet bundle looks like a good deal -- and as the post notes, a 4GB Memory Stick can be found on the cheap at many retailers.

We talk about PSP-3000 in Play Magazine

Did you read Play issue #171? If you did, you would've noticed a certain someone from a certain PSP fan blog talking about the recently released PSP-3000 (aka PSP Brite). The blogger in question talks about whether or not Sony upgraded the PSP system too quickly, and why the lack of a second analog stick is no big deal. "A lot of people [said] that Sony should 'fix' the PSP by adding a second analogue stick," says Yoon. "But that would fundamentally change the system, and potentially lock out owners of older models from upcoming games. As it stands, PSP owners, from the 1000 to the 3000 series, are all able to play upcoming games."

Watch Tales of the World 2's new characters fight

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 is a total fan service title. Anyone who has played the first one could inform you on that. With that in mind, it's easy to note that the biggest factor that's going to drive people into getting Tales of the World for round two would be its cast of cameo characters.

So, just who is going to make it into the new Radiant Mythology from all the other Tales games? Some of the new characters have been revealed to be: Cless Alvein (embedded above) from Tales of Phantasia, Presea Combatir from Tales of Symphonia, Guy Cecil from Tales of the Abyss, Iria Animi from Tales of Innocence and Caius Qualls from Tales of the Tempest. You can see all of them in gameplay vids after the break, along with the original character Kanonno.

The game will be out in Japan by January 29. While a North American release date has yet to be even mentioned, a stateside release seems likely.

Sony previously pegged the PSP to sell roughly 15 million units for this fiscal year ending March 2009. Now, the company is saying they're going to crush that forecast by another one million units. This news comes in light despite issues with the newly released PSP Brite. However, Sony still has other models currently out on the market including the sleek Blue and Red Slim models that are expected to sell, sell, sell.

Sony's numbers in Japan have done amazingly well thus far this year, selling over 1.6 million units from April to September; however, if the PSP is to meet 16 million units by March, there's still a lot of work to be done worldwide.

Sony: PSP sales to beat fiscal year forecast
