Sony game division posts hardware losses, game sales decline

The third quarter was not kind to Sony as the company's video game footprint posted sales and operating revenue of just ¥393.8 billion, or $4.3 billion for the period ended December 31, 2008. That may sound like a lot, but it represents a substantial 32.2 percent decline in revenue compared to the same three month stretch in 2007.

Likely a result of the economy's ongoing downward powerslide, Sony revealed declining sales across each of its hardware platforms, even the seemingly bulletproof PS2, which sold through 2.52 million units compared to 2.88 million the previous year. PS3 sales dropped 44,000 units to 4.46 million for the quarter, while 5.08 million, or 68,000 fewer PSP units went out the door as well. If there is a silver lining to be seen -- and you really have to squint to see it -- it's that PS3 game sales were up 14.8 million units over last year, though with shrinking PSP software sales and a staggering 31.2 million unit drop off in PS2 games sold, we doubt anyone at Sony's game division is throwing a party.

New Godfather II trailer shows 'The Don's View'

At least that's what Robert Duvall told us in the latest trailer for the upcoming EA sequel. Yes, good old Tom Hagen will be by your side to aide in obtaining a blood-splattered key to the city. And not "by your side" in the "we're going dancing" kind of way. You'll definitely be shooting people in the face. With guns.

Bamboo Blade: Sorekara no Chousen to hit PSP in April

Anime fans rejoice: Toraji "Kojir?" Ishida and his fierce clan of fighters are coming to the PSP. Bamboo Blade, the popular manga series from the producers of Gun Sword, will see new life on Sony's handheld this April in Japan, according to Saiani.net. Bambo Blade follows the exploits of luckless high school Kendo instructor, Kojir?, and his band of female trainees as they battle for all-you-can-eat sushi. Oh, and honor.

Bamboo Blade: Sorekara no Chousen for the PSP is a story-driven card-battle title with voice work from the cast of the original anime, which ended in mid-2008. Card-battles? Bamboo? Does it get better than that? Well, it will if a publisher decides to bring it Stateside.

Mirror's Edge Time Trial DLC delayed to February; PS3 exclusive map on 1/29

Ever wonder what Faith from Mirror's Edge dreams about? Tom Farrer, producer of Mirror's Edge, answered this question on the PlayStation.Blog: "She apparently dreams about enormous abstract sculptures floating above an endless sea!"

The upcoming time trial DLC pack for Mirror's Edge was originally scheduled for release tomorrow. However, Big Download reports that these additional races will come in February. The delay should give fans a bit more time to practice their skills -- the DLC adds new Trophies that only the most hardcore players will be able to achieve. (At the time of writing, we haven't seen if the 360 version will get new Achievements as well.)

While the premium maps won't be available until next month, PS3 owners will still be able to download a system-exclusive map on the PlayStation Store tomorrow. "Synethesia" will be free to all owners of the PS3 version of Mirror's Edge. A trailer can be seen after the break.
