2K Sports confirms online server overhaul

If you've been a longtime fan of 2K Sports games, you've likely run into the dreaded "2K network is unavailable" screen when trying to go online for a match. During a preview of 2K Sports' latest titles, Joystiq asked whether gamers have seen the last of that hated prompt, to which a 2K Sports representative told us the company is well aware of the server overload and currently working to rectify it.

With the launch of its new titles in each sports series, 2K is preparing a complete server overhaul from the ground up. It'll replace its entire server bed handling online games in the hopes of getting players off the bench and back into the game.

Kirby's Epic Yarn, for example, is still a cutesy side-scroller, like other Kirby games, but it presents a new art style that seems pretty far out for such a mainstream game, one that has charmed me to an uncomfortable degree. The game also adds a new gameplay gimmick that, while it's not as drastic a change as Canvas Curse, still alters the basics of Kirby. And, like every new 2D platformer announced at E3, it has co-op.

We don't think anyone would argue that the Lego brand isn't reaching a notorious level of oversaturation in the gaming space. Between the adaptations of classic film franchises, video game IPs, hell, even an MMO, it's beginning to seem that every other game that gets revealed nowadays somehow features snap-together protagonists.

And yet. LucasArts and Traveller's Tales next entry in the successful Lego Star Wars series, the undisputed O.G. of Lego-based, family friendly action games, looks to be a fresh addition to the pack. Not due to sweeping gameplay innovations or a sea change in the way the developer has adapted the source material -- but rather, due to the thick layer of polish Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars has received since the series' last installment.
