PSP Fanboy hands-on: SOCOM Tactical Strike

SOCOM: Tactical Strike recently went gold, and it's been in our hands for the past week or so. We have to admit, we're totally enamored with this brand new re-imagining of the SOCOM series. It's hard to think of a single flaw with Tactical Strike -- it's just that good. Of course, there's a lot more we have to do. After the first five hours of play, we've only gone through three missions. Ignoring any Instant Action replays or Infrastructure-enabled multiplayer, it's clear that Tactical Strike will offer at least twenty hours of gameplay, if not more.

Tactical Strike delivers on so many levels, and is easily on its way to becoming more than just PSP Game of the Year. No, the sheer quality of this title makes it an easy contender for Game of the Year on any platform. The technical excellence is absolutely astounding. Graphics like these simply shouldn't be possible on the PSP, as it easily bests most of the PS2 library. If you thought Logan's Shadow of Chains of Olympus looked good, you haven't seen Tactical Strike. Textures are incredible, especially for a PSP game. The character models are well detailed, and feature incredibly detailed animations. Then, you add real time lighting, fantastic volumetric smoke effects, and large, expansive, detailed environments that must be seen to be believed. Just wait until you see the streaks of sunlight pour through the jungle flora above you. On the PSP screen, or connected to a TV, this game looks absolutely incredible. These screenshots just don't do the game justice: it must be seen to be believed.

%Gallery-3218%

The gameplay is absolutely engrossing -- maybe too much so (we've missed a couple of subway stops thanks to this game). There's a significant learning curve, but the built-in tutorial does a fantastic job of teaching players the basics in an intuitive way. Players control two squads of two soldiers, and must use their tactical knowledge to complete their objectives. Players never take direct control of the soldiers: don't expect this to play like previous SOCOM games. In fact, each soldier has its own AI and will try to take care of themselves -- you merely provide the directives and suggestions that they must try to follow. Careful positioning and timing is vital to success, as it only takes a second or two to see the results of your actions. Smart players will remain stealthy, killing enemies as quietly as possible. When gunfire needs to be used, players will know how to set up Alpha and Bravo fireteams to fire from opposing angles, to take enemies by surprise. Enemies will die in a few bullets ... but so will your soldiers.

The incredible realism of the game makes it so utterly compelling. Don't expect to run and gun your way through levels. Enemies will intelligently respond to the changing environment and will do an incredible job of trying to flank you and hide behind cover. They will call for reinforcements, be cautious when someone is mysteriously killed, and will even use snipers to try and get rid of you. This is a brutally difficult game, where no man can be "left behind." To tackle such overwhelming odds, you will find that you will start thinking in totally new ways ... and the game will always try to counter your tactics. It's a brilliant game of chess, but faster and far deadlier.

We won't go into specifics about the game's incredible story and presentation -- that's something we're going to save for our final review. Unless something drastic changes in the game's latter half, we're confident that this will be the single best game in the PSP library for a long time to come.

Manhunt 2 + pen = murder

Ah, so that's why it was banned ...

Rockstar's Manhunt 2, although edited, looks quite gruesome. Although the violence is covered by the dramatic use of visual filters, it still maintains the visceral feel that many (if not most) so-called-violent games are missing. Taking a cue from The Bourne Identity, we see our favorite anti-hero kill a man with a pen -- but for reasons unknown. Check out IGN for more brutality.

Most of Beowulf cast lends voice to game

The game adaptation of Beowulf will have a few things in its favor when it transitions from film to video game as several of the movie's stars have lent their voice talents and likenesses to Ubisoft. Although Anthony Hopkins, Rayn Winstone, Brendan Gleeson and Sebastien Roche all are on board, Beowulf actress and Tomb Raider star Angelina Jolie declined to participate.

"I must say it was one of the hardest working days of my career," Winstone said of his days spent working with Ubisoft. "But it was vital to capturing the power of the film and translating that into a great gaming experience. Beowulf is a brutal character, a Dark Age-gangster with both hero and monster in him ... as a player, I can identify with the monster slayer."

Not only will the game benefit from the movie actor's participation, Ubisoft is also adding in more than 30 years of story that didn't make the cut in the movie. It's about time this legendary story has been turned into a video game, but we just hope Ubisoft can capture director Robert Zemeckis' excellent vision. We'll see when the game releases Nov. 13.

Deal of the Day: PSP component cables for $10

You need component cables to take advantage of the TV out capabilities of the new PSP-2000. So, why not get the cables for cheap? MonoPrice, a specialty retailer, is somehow selling these babies at under $10, before shipping. Of course, for the best deal, you'll want to order 50 ...

Remember: component cables will only work on EDTV/HDTV systems. Regular TVs can not display game content.

Gran Turismo PSP ambitions include PSP/PS3 play, race manager feature

In a revealing interview with Joystiq, Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi talked about his current plans, dreams and ambitions for the potentially upcoming Gran Turismo Mobile. "Once we get GT5 out," he notes. "We hope to position it as the satellite to GT5 on PS3, GT on PSP."

Of course, making Gran Turismo 5 is no easy task, and who knows how long it'll take for the team at Polyphony to put the finishing touches on that game. Regardless, it's clear that there are some truly ambitious plans for GT when (or if) it ever comes to PSP. One idea involves being able to save replays from the PS3 and display them on the PSP. "One example would be for people to utilize replays of their race experience. Take that outside the home, whereas at home you would need the PS3, but they can take that away and share."

Another wish of the GT team is for PS3-PSP versus play. "We're just talking ideals here - but it would be nice if we were able to allow people to compete whether they're on the road or in their living room on the PS3, compete in the same race. Even though the visual qualities will be different depending on which hardware they're on it would be nice if we could allow for that. Technically, we think we should be able to."

Finally, another feature that would be added to a PSP version would be one where players don't even race the car. "Basically you're the race manager. You don't even need to steer the controller, you just set the car and let it go; you're managing it. Another example would be the PSP would be your management tool: give it input and give it instructions and the car would continue on with the race." Visit Joystiq for the complete interview.

PSP Fanboy review: SWAT Target Liberty

How unfortunate that at the same time we received our review copy of SWAT: Target Liberty, we also received our review copy of Sony's upcoming SOCOM Tactical Strike. The differences between the two titles only accentuate SWAT's significant shortcomings. It's not a bad game per se, but when compared to other offerings in the PSP library, it doesn't offer much. Neither tactical enough to be a thinking man's shooter, nor action-packed to be a fun arcade shooter, Target Liberty falls somewhere in between, and fails to really engage the player.

SWAT's convoluted story line takes place in a poorly-represented New York City. At first, players must engage warring Korean gangs that have civilians in the crossfire. Inexplicably, the fights will have you gunning through subway stations and office buildings in a search for a ... dirty bomb constructed by Islamic fundamentalists? The story is haphazardly constructed and does little more than magically transplant your team from one locale to the next.

The main star of the game is Wolfe, and at his disposal are three squad mates (two of which can be used in each mission). Theoretically, you can change weapons and characters, but there's almost no compelling reason to do so. Each mission can be tackled with the same gear and the same characters, thereby greatly reducing the amount of "tactics" the game should have.

%Gallery-5219%

Really, the game doesn't offer much for the strategic player. Levels consist of crawling through fairly linear environments shooting at enemies whilst smashing Triangle to yell at them. There's very little reason to take cover, especially when your overly aggressive AI teammates seem to strike down everything that moves fairly well. Weapons don't really matter, except when key players must be taken without being killed.

One of the focal points of the game is how you infiltrate doors. You will be able to put a mirror under a door and see if something is beyond it. At that point, you can pick locks, bust down the door, and choose to throw in grenades. This provides a little bit of variety at first, but becomes a tedious chore when facing door after door. Ultimately, it seems more efficient to simply run through a room and start shooting everything in sight. Thankfully, most enemies won't put up much of a fight, as they apathetically put down their weapons and raise their arms in the air.

Everyone you encounter, civilian and terrorist alike, should be subdued and interrogated -- and this becomes a chore quite quickly. If interrogation was limited to a few points, and a more engaging method of gameplay was used, it would've certainly had more longevity to it.

The gameplay isn't really terrible. However, it lacks depth to maintain interest for more than an hour or so. The graphics can be viewed the same way. Far from displeasing to the eye, the game does very little to advance the graphical capabilities of Sony's handheld. Environments are very large, but character models are poorly constructed, and environments look quite lifeless. A glaring flaw that should be noted is the lengthy load time for each level. Once a level is loaded, the game will mostly run without a hitch. However, waiting for up to thirty seconds for a level is somewhat unacceptable by today's standards.

Finally, did we mention this game is short? Yes, there are multiple difficulties and collectibles scattered throughout each level. However, there's very little compelling reason to play through the game more than once.

Ultimately, SWAT: Target Liberty isn't a bad game. But, it's far from being a good one. Its basic, rudimentary gameplay may appeal to some. However, those looking for the depth expected of a SWAT title will find themselves sorely disappointed.

SmackDown! vs. Raw 2008 improves on predecessors

Last year's iteration of WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2007 was hindered by long load times, lack of commentary and some embarrassingly small crowds. Well, according to IGN, developer Yukes has fixed two of those problems with loading times that are similar to its console counterparts and stadium-filled crowds that show a lot more excitement than previous years.

Not only will gamers finally be able to play as their favorite ECW wrestlers, PSP owners will be treated to extra wrestlers Eddie Guerrero, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Sgt. Slaughter that consoles owners aren't getting. SVR '08 hits the PSP Nov. 13.

Cable allows easy hook-up of third party GPS systems

Tired of waiting for SCEA to bring the official GPS peripheral to the States? A cable manufacturer is trying to ease the pain by allowing you to connect standard third party GPS devices to the PSP. Obviously, it'll require a bit of tricky "haxz0rzing," but there's plenty of documentation on how to make your PSP an affordable GPS device. With a new upcoming cable, it'll even work on the new PSP-2000 systems.

PSP Fanboy review: Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron

We're providing a shortened review for Renegade Squadron because ... well, you've read most of our impressions. In fact, you've read impressions from Andrew, Colin, Nick and Jem. Here's a final thought on the game with the now-requisite PSP Fanboy score.

Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is an impressive technical accomplishment for the PSP. It's certainly has its flaws, but bringing massive online battles such as these exclusively to the handheld certainly deserves some applause. Without a doubt, Renegade Squadron is the Warhawk or Halo of the PSP: the definitive online game for our system.

The included single player mode is brief, easy, but nonetheless well executed. When viewed as a primer for the game's primary mode, the online multiplayer, the single player campaign more than delivers. Instead of being destroyed by the competitive online field, this gives a chance for players to learn the nuances of the control, giving each player a fair chance of mastering the game before heading online. The Conquest Mode was a stand-up hit for many on the PSP Fanboy team -- and for good reason. The addition of "Instant Action" against bots is also a huge plus -- something that's missing in many modern console shooters.

The removal of character classes from the Battlefront series was a fantastic decision and makes Renegade Squadron the most accessible of the games so far. Without character classes, players are free to adapt their character at whim: you can be a heavy gunner at one moment, then become a regenerating base capturer. With the allocated character points at your disposal, you have access to quite a number of abilities. However, thanks to some excellent point distribution, no character you create will ever feel truly overpowering. Instead, it's up to careful strategy to make sure your character is appropriately equipped for each battle.

Many of the gameplay modes are quite entertaining. You'll have the staples of the genre: deathmatch and capture the flag. However, there are some unique twists. Capture the Flag has each side controlling one famous "star" from the franchise, such as Darth Vader. This "star" has a radically different move set, extended health, and will defend the flag. Playing as these heroes is a refreshing change, but even more enjoyable is taking down a hero and taking their flag. Sorry Chewbacca, but I needed your flag.

Although there are tons of vehicles and space battles, it's clear that the game's strengths come from its ground combat. Vehicles feel sluggish and don't control intuitively. Aiming within vehicles is difficult, giving players a significant disadvantage for being inside a vehicle. Space battles simply don't work with the default controls, and don't offer the visceral thrill offered by other modes of the game.

Supporting 16 players via Infrastructure is impressive, but the graphics clearly suffer due to Rebellion's ambition. Modern PSP games look far better than this, usually sporting better draw distance, better textures and better character models. The framerate holds up fairly well, but in crowded areas, expect to count the number of frames rendered on your hands.

In spite of its flaws, the online battles really shine when there's a healthy amount of competition. If you're looking for the most epic online multiplayer on PSP, it's clear that Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron is a must.

PSP Fanboy Score: 7.5

The power to charge your PSP ... on your wrist!

Oh no! You're in the middle of SOCOM: Tactical Strike, and as you're about to infiltrate the terrorist stronghold, you see your PSP's power indicator flashing. You haven't reached a checkpoint yet, and you certainly don't want to give up now! What are you to do? Act like Batman.

A cute new device in Japan allows users to charge their PSP (and other mobile devices) simply by connecting it to a handy wristband. The inconspicuous accessory will provide an extra 3.5 hours of battery life for your PSP when you need it. We're hoping that future versions of this peripheral will allow you to shoot a grappling hook, spider webs, and lasers. Considering this is from Japan, we're nearly certain it'll happen.

Famitsu reveals new Star Ocean details

Interested in some new Star Ocean information? Famitsu has heard your internal cries via its giant Japanese thought catcher and, in response, has released a double page spread of images and text about the game. While most of the info will be familiar to you if you're a fan of the series, there are also a few snippets regarding new additions to the game.

The game will feature a redone introduction, redesigned characters, fully voiced cutscenes as well as an enhanced battle system. Star Ocean seems to be having a complete makeover on the PSP - even moreso than Final Fantasy I and II. We're excited to see a series that has potentially been overlooked in its past incarnations be given such great treatment for its PSP conversion.

Japan gets Butcher figure for Silent Hill pre-order

This is one of the best pre-order bonuses we've seen in quite some time. Japanese PSP fans that pick up Silent Hill Zero (known as Origins elsewhere) will get a free Butcher figure. This grim bonus comes at no additional cost, so long as you pre-order the game. Hopefully, Konami of America will do something similar.

Play.com: White PSP heading to UK next week

The PSP Slim & Lite has been reliably mysterious. Sony, in all of its territories, has done a fantastic job of keeping everyone in the dark of when their systems are going to come out. Case in point: the white PSP-2000. Well, retailer play.com has listed a release date for the white non-Darth Vader system: October 26th.

It's the first time we've heard of a release date for the system. The system should satiate those that have been patiently waiting for a non-black (or silver!) system in the territory.

Super Swing Golf Pangya could be coming to PSP

Pangya!

The ultra-popular Korean online golf game may find itself on another home. With the PC and Wii platforms already conquered, it looks like PSP is the next target for cutesy Korean golf gaming. Zach M. from Siliconera noticed that a Korean music composer listed the game on his website. He's worked on previous Pangya games, and the addition of a PSP version leads us to believe that one is in the works ... at least for Korea.

It's not uncommon for musicians to leak a game in development. In fact, that's exactly what happened with Secret Agent Clank.

David Jaffe's new games ideal for PSP

With Jaffe no longer bound by the chains of God of War, his newly formed independent studio, Eat Sleep Play, can work on smaller projects. Considering his desire to go back to smaller, pick up and play games, it appears that PSP is the ideal platform for Jaffe to begin with. (Jaffe previously worked on a canceled PSP exclusive called Heartland.) Speaking to Level Up's N'Gai Croal, Jaffe reveals "We're really more about fun, pick up and play, arcade, multiplayer, just having a really good time, at least on the Sony end."

Although Jaffe has expressed interest in Sony's handheld, there's still no confirmation of what platform his next game will end up on. "We haven't announced if we're on Blu-Ray, if we're on PSN, if we're on handheld. All we've really announced is that we are exclusive to Sony in those areas for three titles."

We'll keep you in the know.

Tomb Raider Anniversary ready for European release on October 26th

Tomb Raider Anniversary is almost ready for its European debut on the PSP. The remake of the original PS1 game will be available on shelves on October 26th. If you don't fancy waiting for the PSP version, however, the PC and PS2 versions are already available, with Xbox 360 and Wii versions to follow later this year. Still, if the opportunity for some portable Tomb Raider action is there, then why not go for it? The game has been available in the US for quite a while already, so if you're really impatient then you could always import it and get it a week or so early.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus goes gold

Filed under: Metal Gear: Portable Ops

It's official. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops+ is getting primed for US release. This expansion pack of the original MGS:PO will arrive in the States on November 13th for $19.99.

"Infinity Mission" is the new single player campaign (a Sony e-mail misprinted Infinity War as the name of the entire game). Just like the original Portable Ops, players will be able to recruit new comrades and gain new weapons through the single player campaign. Additional multiplayer modes, such as Shooting Range and Training Mode, will ll test the skills of each player. In addition, Portable Ops+ will use the save data from the original game so that you can continue with the squad you had originally created.

Additional online maps in Plus include an updated version of the original Metal Gear Solid's REX Hangar. Additional characters, like Raiden and Old Snake, are also hidden in the game. Stay tuned for more.

Camera gets fitted into PSP innards

[Update: Ryan Patton responds: "Infinite War" was the codename I gave to the project before "MPO+" was decided on. Funny how things find their ways to retailers. Thanks, Random!]

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 30

Ask PSP Fanboy is back with an all new edition. Every few weekends, PSP Fanboy will answer your burning questions. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ joystiq.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q: Do the component cable ONLY work on HDTVs? Or can you use a SDTV as well? And what is the difference between the two cables?
A: We get this question on a nearly daily basis. Component cables will only work on EDTV/HDTV sets with component inputs. You can NOT use a SDTV. The main difference between the two is that the component cables will allow you to play games on your TV. If you do not have a HDTV, you will not be able to play PSP games on your TV. Hope that clears things up!

Q: Is there any way to access the PlayStation Store for downloading PSP from PS1 ports without using a PS3? If there is how does it work? And if not do you think that they will have it any time soon?
A: A PSP version of the Store is already in the works, and is available right now in Japan. We won't see it until next year, I'd assume. However, the Store will not only include PS1 games, it will also include brand new games that were made specifically for the PSP.

Q: Is the PSP-2000 just as capable of running custom firmwares as the original?
A: It depends. The first batch of PSP-2000 systems can be exploited using Pandora's Battery. However, recent reports suggest that any new systems, such as the Star Wars PSP, are not vulnerable to the exploit. You'll have to experiment

Q: How much space does a UMD hold. is it just a plain ol' mini DVD?
A: A UMD holds 900MB of space single-layer, and 1.8GB of space dual-layer. It's not the same as a mini DVD, which holds up to 2.6GB of data. However, they use the same technology: red lasers (as opposed to blue). Because the format is proprietary, you won't be able to create your own UMD discs. Sorry!

Q: How many PSPs do you own?
A: If you really need to know, it's currently at three. Two PSP-1000 systems (one with homebrew enabled) and another PSP-2000 system.

For a Hero, You're Pretty Impudent: the trailer

The brand new play-as-the-villain RPG for PSP, Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida, has us intrigued. Vagrant Story a "natural" choice for next PSP makeover

In an interview recently, the Ivalice Alliance (the Square Enix development team behind the legendary titles Final Fantasy Tactics (Advance), Final Fantasy XII, and Vagrant Story) had a roundtable chat, so to speak, about the future of their games, of Ivalice, and what's going to happen on the PSP. Feel free to check out the discussion about all things Ivalice, but we're only interested in one segment of the discussion -- and that's Vagrant Story.

Vagrant Story is the only game that hasn't gotten some form of remake or sequel and with the release of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, it seems like it would be logical for it to return. On this idea, the Ivalice Alliance responds: "Vagrant Story was a title that pushed the PS one to its limits. The technical hurdles in porting it to the PSP would be extremely high. Of course, I think it's the next natural candidate for such an update, and there's no denying its extreme popularity overseas."

When asked if the hero, Ashley Riot, could appear in some other Ivalice title, there is a hint of a sequel if you're good at reading between these lines: "Even in Vagrant Story, there's really not that much we learn about Ashley Riot. Without knowing more about him, it would be difficult to include him in another title." We could learn more about him in, say, Vagrant Story 2: The Wanderer. Just an opinion.

Behind the scenes of Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Sony's been becoming quite versed in the promomentary -- documentaries meant solely to promote a certain product. Considering the incredible moves Logan can pull off in Logan's Shadow, that's certainly not a bad thing. After a brief introduction to Rucka's work, see how Logan can take out his enemies by using blind fire and grappling. We can describe it, but seeing it actually unfold in front of your eyes is another thing.

This latest Syphon Filter title received a 9.0 from PSP Fanboy, and comes highly recommended.

Sony lays out its plans for the PSP Store

GI.biz has managed to wangle a host of new details about the PSP store. We know it's currently available in Japan and has been since TGS, but what about the English speaking world? And what can we expect to find on it? The US version of the store will be unveiled this winter on PC and at some point in 2008 on the PSP. The PC version allows you to download straight to your PSP via a USB cable, while the PSP version will be accessible directly on the handheld via any wireless access point.

Sony has also revealed that seven download-only games are in production for the service during 2008. These include three action games, two rhythm games, a racing title and a shooting game. All of these games are being developed in-house by Sony, though there are talks of getting third-party publishers involved. Other content which will be available throughout 2008 will include video content such as trailers and behind the scenes clips, downloadable content for UMD games, demos and PS1 games. Thirteen PS1 games will be made available throughout 2008, all of which are currently available on the PS3 Store. Presumably these games will be from the Japanese PlayStation Store as the European and American stores have considerably less than 13 available currently.

There is currently no word on a European release date but chances are the American store will be accessible from European territories (and it'll probably be updated more often, too), so no worries there.

Pre-order Castlevania, get a free Belmont figure

Chances are most PSP owners are chomping at the bit to get ahold of Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles as soon as it's available, but Gamestop's making that decision even easier. People who pre-order the game before it releases Oct. 23 through Gamestop's website will get a free "8-bit Simon Belmont figure."

We couldn't imagine passing up on Dracula X Chronicles as it features an enhanced Rondo of Blood version as well as unlockable versions of Symphony of Night and the original Rondo of Blood for a mere $30, but the old-school Belmont figure is just icing on the cake.

If you're looking to get in on this deal, you better hurry as it's only good until supplies last.

Feel free to leave a comment with your questions, and we'll send them over to the development team. Please respond by October 10th for your question to be considered. Thanks!

Atari Nordic signs deal to distribute Xyanide Resurrection

Like a prairie dog, it seems like Xyanide Resurrection will vanish for awhile only to pop its head up to make sure everyone knows it's still around. After releasing a demo in June, we haven't heard much about Playlogic's new shooter, but the developer has recently announced a distribution deal with Atari Nordic, as well as saying the game should be released in mid-to-late October.

Under the terms of the agreement, Atari Nordic will distribute Xyanide Resurrection, as well as several other games Playlogic has in development, in the Netherlands. "I am very pleased with this agreement. It is important for Playlogic to keep increasing its presence in the Nordic markets and we look forward to a fruitful partnership with Atari Nordic," said Pierre Thiercelin, international sales director of Playlogic.

We didn't realize the Netherlands was such a vital territory like Thiercelin suggests, but it's great to know the game is still heading our way.

Sonic Rivals 2 adds Knockout brawl mode

If Sonic doesn't end up in Super Smash Bros later this year, it looks like you'll have to resort to the PSP-exclusive Sonic Riders 2 for some hedgehog-on-hedgehog action fighting.

Also in the upcoming Sonic Rivals sequel is the ability to play multiplayer with just one UMD, a feature that we love to see in PSP games. Now with this added battle mode and Game Sharing, it looks like Rivals 2 will greatly expand upon the previous game's offerings.

Two more join Japan's The Best

Filed under: Imports, Tales of..., Ape Escape

"The Best" line-up is Japan's equivalent of the "Greatest Hits" series. These titles showcase their success by re-releasing ons store shelves with a budget price. Two more titles met "The Best" requirements in Japan today: Ape Escape Racer and unsurprisingly, Tales of the World.

Japan's list of budget-priced games continues to expand. However, American gamers have not had an update to the PSP budget line-up since Daxter in the summer. Hopefully, that'll change later this year, in time for the holiday season.

Will the Acidmods community ever stop impressing us? Unlikely. Their latest project adds a camera to the PSP. However, unlike all other PSP cameras out there, this is internal, installed directly inside the PSP. The camera is natively supported by the PSP firmware. Neat!

[Thanks, grandpasmurf!]

What is Metal Gear Solid: Infinite War? [Update]

Filed under: Metal Gear: Portable Ops

A recent Sony newsletter revealed a mysterious title: Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops: Infinite War. Could this be the US title of Portable Ops Plus? But, the ESRB has already rated a game named Portable Ops Plus -- surely, this can't be a different game! Is this a mistake, or is MGS getting a title change for the US?

[Update: Ryan Patton responds: "Infinite War" was the codename I gave to the project before "MPO+" was decided on. Funny how things find their ways to retailers. Thanks, Random!]

Japan celebrates Legend of Heroes series

Unlike in America, the Legend of Heroes franchise in Japan is quite popular. So much so that a new collector's UMD is coming out to satiate the series' hardcore fan base. Included on the bonus UMD are cutscenes, wallpapers, background music and themes. Officially dubbed Sora no Kiseki: Material Collection Portable, we guarantee this will never, ever get a release outside of Japan.

While the art style certainly doesn't appeal to our sensibilities, any game that lets you wreak havoc on potential do-gooders is fine by us. The brand new trailer from Sony shows you what the game is all about. You seem to carve a path for explorers to take, and then send your minions. Watch as the little critters take down the hero, and you laugh your way to victory.

(Sort of) Deal of the Day: Monster Hunter for $30

It's a slow news day, folks. Might as well save some money. amazon.com has Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd, the gazillion-selling PSP game, at a discounted $30. That's a savings of $10. Sure, it's not a great deal, but it's better than nothing, right?

Sony starts extensive PSP campaign on adult swim

Cartoon Network's adult swim website is being plastered with ads for the new PSP. Good thing -- the adult swim demographic is exactly what Sony needs to target to keep PSP momentum strong. Check out Bertrum's Almanack, which provides some "fun facts" to listeners. Unfortunately, the site says that "Bertrum's Almanack not available on PSP system." But, games like NBA 08 and Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow are. Hopefully, this campaign is one of many Sony's planning to promote their handheld.

Send us your questions on Secret Agent Clank

PSP Fanboy readers are an inquisitive bunch, and we're giving you a great opportunity to chat with the High Impact team.
