Dissidia is #1 in Japan, sells nearly half a million copies

Surprising no one, Dissidia was numero uno on last week's Media Create Japanese sales charts, selling an astonishing 489,126 copies. Did it have the best debut week ever for a PSP title in Japan? Of course not, not even close -- that honor belongs to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which managed to push 820,000 copies out the door in its first week, according to PSPHyper. However, it did beat out another Final Fantasy spinoff, Crisis Core, by 3,000 units.

On the hardware side, it was also a healthy week for the PSP: our beloved portable saw 145,957 units in sales, though it was still bested by the DS, which sold 204,144 units. Now the real question is, does Square Enix's fan-service brawler have the momentum it takes to be top dog again next week? Sales numbers and ranking for the top 10 Japanese games of the week are after the jump:

Yep, Disgaea 2 is coming to the PSP

Ah, so the rumors were true. Nippon Ichi has announced that Disgaea 2 will be headed for the PSP on March 26th in Japan. This upcoming portable version of the SRPG will feature a 30% longer story as well as new characters. A screenshot also suggests that the Magichange system found in Disgaea 3 will be added to the port, but this has not been officially announced. No word yet on a stateside release, but we see no reason why there wouldn't be one.

'Whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles' coming from Capcom in 09

Is the game drought over? We hope so. Capcom's John Diamonon hinted at increased PSP support in 2009 in a recent post on the PlayStation.Blog. "So what's in store for 09? Well, I'm working with Grace and Ro at SCEA to come up with some innovative ways we can offer games and programs on the PlayStation Store. You can expect to see a whole slew of downloadable PSP and PSone titles from our vault next year."

Capcom has released a number of great PSP games which we'd love to see re-released on the PlayStation Store. Mega Man Powered Up, anyone? However, their PSone offerings have us even more excited. Let's not forget that they released Breath of Fire, Marvel vs. Capcom, a whole slew of Mega Man games, Resident Evil and Street Fighter games during the PSone era. Having them on the go would be perfect.

European PSN releases for December 24th

Okay, Europe. It looks like SCEE is trying to make things up to you for being a day late with your PSN update. Sure, America got its hands on Suikoden yesterday, but you've got five full games to choose from. Dead Head Fred is the best of the bunch, though it's sadly the most expensive, too. Fighting game fans will be in heaven with Street Fighter Alpha Warrior's Dreams as well as Guilty Gear Judgement to choose from. Here's the full release list:
  • Street Fighter Alpha Warriors' Dreams PS1 game (£4.79/€5.99)

PS1 classic Suikoden now available on the US PSN Store

Just one new item on the US PSN Store today, but it's a good'n. If you're an RPG fan and a retrophile then you'll no doubt be thrilled with the release of Suikoden onto the PSN Store. This great (if schizophrenic) JRPG will set you back $5.99. It's a pretty rare find nowadays, so it's good to see that it's being made available via digital distribution. This is how it should be; PS1 classics preserved in time via the PlayStation Network. Real classics. Not Reel Fishing.

Dissidia's ridiculously epic intro movie

Dissidia has graced Japan and it won't be long until the rest of the world will be able to join in. As expected, the CG intro to the Final Fantasy mash-up is epic -- perhaps more so than we could have possibly imagined. Watch all the heroes and villains battle in one super-battle will make any fanboy or girl squeal. Fanfic writers, this is the stuff of legends.

Check it out, after the break.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of December 21

With Christmas just a few days away, we're not surprised to see little to nothing releasing this week. And you know, this dry spell of holiday releases is somewhat of a blessing in disguise, actually. You see, the holiday season isn't about games and gifts; it's about spending time with the family and wishing you'd leave them again soon after. So put down the games (or don't because there are none for PSP) and make sure you make time for the people that matter most.

NA Games:

  • No new releases
EU Games:
  • No new releases
Asian Games:
Across the ocean in Asia, they're really enjoying the commercial aspect of the season. At least over here, we're shedding materialism and embracing family values. Asia could seriously learn a lot from us.

PixelJunk Monsters coming to PSP

Looks like more PS3 games are coming to the PSP. The popular tower defense game, PixelJunk Monsters, is heading to the PSP. In fact, there's going to be more content than ever before. To find out more about the game, check out all the news on PS3 Fanboy.

Rumor: Disgaea 2 port coming to PSP

NIS is a big fan of the PSP. Not only did it port the original PS2 Disgaea onto the PSP, it's bringing over a brand new platformer starring Prinny. However, fans of the Disgaea series may have more to look forward to. Hong Kong games magazine GameWave is reporting that a PSP version of Disgaea 2 will be available on March 26th in Japan. Because Nippon Ichi hasn't officially announced the game, we're going to mark this as a rumor. Let's hope this one comes to fruition.

Check out some new screenshots in our gallery, and enjoy the trailer.

Update: Mytran Wars was originally supposed to come out in 2008. It has since been delayed to 2009.

Dissidia sells 350k during Japanese launch

Who didn't see this coming? Dissidia, Square Enix's PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy brawler, sold 350,000 units in its first day in Japan, according to Sinobi. 40k of the total went to sales of the 20th Anniversary Limited Pack, which includes a special limited PSP-3000 system. This means Dissidia's launch is equal to that of Crisis Core -- but it still can't touch the incredible sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold 670,000 units when it debuted.

A US release is scheduled for release in mid-2009. However, for those curious about the controls, an English manual can be read here.

Kuromoku and the gang are trying to evict Gen's neighbors from their homes! Oh no! Obviously, you'll have to stop them.

Castlevania Chronicles will appear on the PS Store today

As the ESRB predicted, Castlevania Chronicles will make its debut on the US PSN later today. Wired got word that the PlayStation uno remake of the 1993 Sharp X68000 title will come in the form of a PS Store download. The remake features improved graphics, remixed music, level redesigns as well as a rendered introduction and ending. At one point, this rare game would have fetched a rather fabulous price on eBay, but now gamers won't have to pay big bucks to join in on the Dracula hunting fun -- instead, the price of admission will be a recession-friendly $5.99.

Way better than Castlevania Judgement, we'll give you that.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy officially announced for the US

Square Enix has just officially announced Dissidia: Final Fantasy for North America. Not much new information was provided, other than what we already know -- the story involves Cosmos and Chaos, who are locked in an eternal conflict, the characters will span from different Final Fantasy titles in the past 20 years, the battle system will be action-based and you will have the ability to trade Friend Cards. Unfortunately, no word on the fancy-schmancy limited edition.

The release window is said to be "mid-year 2009," so it is still at least several months away. We can't wait! And while you do that, check out our hands-on with the brawler.

Sony denies PSP2 rumors, calls it "misinterpretation"

Chatting with Silicon Alley Insider, Sony's John Koller called the PSP2 rumor "completely unfounded." Koller called the push for a PSP2 a "misinterpretation" for the PSP's refocused direction away from UMDs and move towards digital distribution. Despite a flat out denial from Sony, Eurogamer -- the publication which first ran the PSP-4000 and PSP2 rumors -- insists that its sources are "adamant that Sony has specifically discussed both products with them, and that games are in development for a PSP successor."

It's a bit of a tug-of-war here. Who do we believe? It's not too farfetched of an idea that the PSP-4000 is due for next year considering that new hardware has come out annually for the past two years. Couple that without mention from Koller, and it's very likely that this could prove to be still on the table. As for the PSP2, it's never a good time to talk about replacement hardware during a key shopping season, if you catch our drift. Perhaps we'll hear more as we enter 2009.

Atlus brings Ikuze Gen to US as Hammerin' Hero

Atlus is bringing yet another PSP game to our shores. Ikuze Gen is coming to the US as Hammerin' Hero. The game is a 2D platformer from Irem, where the main character uses a hammer and causes lots of destruction. Simple, right?

The game will have both English and Japanese voiceovers. There are twelve levels in all, and through the adventure, players will don a variety of jobs and unlock additional playable characters. We're glad to see this unlikely candidate make its way to the States --it's always good to see another addition to the PSP library.

Asian PSN update for the week of 12/15 - 12/21

Star Strike Portable -- aka Super Stardust Portable -- was all that really mattered this past week in Asia as far as downloading off the PS Store is concerned. It has been a pretty uneventful week this time; there are no PSOne titles to be jealous of. Hooray.

You can catch the weekly Asian PS Store update every Sunday, while you can still enjoy EU and NA updates every Thursday. For PS3-related content, please check PS3 Fanboy.

PixelJunk Monsters coming to PSP

Looks like more PS3 games are coming to the PSP. The popular tower defense game, PixelJunk Monsters, is heading to the PSP. In fact, there's going to be more content than ever before. This is great news, especially because we're not too fond of using Remote Play to stream games. We can't wait to see more when the game comes out in 2009.

Mytran Wars coming to US in 2009, new trailer released

Ready for some strategy action on your PSP? Good, because Mytran Wars may just fit the bill. A new trailer has been released for this PSP-exclusive game, and it's just super-exciting. Maybe it's the heart-thumping music -- or maybe it's because a game is actually coming out on our system (shock!). We're glad to see some support coming our way.

Number of titles supported by adhocParty increased again

The newest update to Sony's Japanese application that allows AdHoc play to now function over the internet via the PS3 is now available. adhocParty 1.04 add many titles to the mix, bringing the number of games supported by the service to over 100. In addition to bringing support to games that have co-op play, even games like Echochrome were included -- meaning you can now trade levels on the web. For details on how to access the service from US, check out the guide here.

For a list of games supported (most likely, only the Japanese versions of each title will be supported), check out the list after the jump (translated by Siliconera):

Atlus puts together a Hammerin' Hero trailer

Well, it's official. Atlus has finally "officially" announced Hammerin' Hero. According to the press release, it sounds like the game is all about the current mortgage and housing crisis. You play Gen, "everyone's favorite justice-bringing carpenter," in a fight against Hyosuke Kuromoku and his evil construction company. Kuromoku and the gang are trying to evict Gen's neighbors from their homes! Oh no! Obviously, you'll have to stop them.

Check out the debut trailer, after the break and new images in our gallery below.
